Bonnie Brown, VMD, CCRP, CCRT (Founder & Veterinarian)
A born and bred New Yorker, Dr. Brown, VMD, CCRP, CCRT, has been a practicing veterinarian for over 25 years. She received her undergraduate degree from Cornell University and graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine receiving the J.B. Lippincott Prize for the highest general average and the 1956 Class Medal for Achievement in Pathology, among other honors. Like many animal lovers, Bonnie had to defer her wish to have a pet of her own until she was an adult. While working in theater as a lighting designer, Bonnie fell in love with a Golden Retriever named Ginger. Her four-legged companion became such an influential part of her life that she wouldn’t take a new job unless the new job took Ginger. Having her dog accompany her to work wasn’t enough, however, and before long, Bonnie made the decision to become a veterinarian.
Bonnie completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery as well as a residency in internal medicine at the Animal Medical Center on Manhattan’s East Side. Following her residency, she served as the Medical Director of the Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center at North Shore Animal League from 1993 to 1999. There she oversaw a staff of 15 doctors and was a member of the senior executive group responsible for the overall direction and mission fulfillment of the NSAL.
From 1999 to 2004, Bonnie was a surgeon for the Fund for Animals’ Have-A-Heart Spay and Neuter Clinic. She continued to work in private practice during that time, initially at Animal General. In 2001, she was appointed Chief of Staff at Ansonia Veterinary Center, where she served for five years. Bonnie then started her own practice, Gotham Veterinary Center, which she operated from within City Veterinary Care. During this early incarnation of Gotham, Bonnie provided care to her own patients while designing and building a new home for her practice. She opened the doors of Gotham Veterinary Center on November 11, 2009, welcoming new and continuing clients and their pets. Bonnie is certified in canine rehabilitation through both the University of Tennessee and the Canine Rehabilitation Institute. Bonnie opened Canine Rehab of NY in 2014 and lives in Manhattan with her dog Ted and has two wonderful sons, David and Steven.
